INTRODUCTION

Jodie S. Shapiro-Shahar is the Senior Trusts and Estates paralegal in the Trusts and Estates group.

Through estate administration beginning with probate, Jodie is in close contact with clients to assist with marshaling assets for the purpose of distribution to beneficiaries in accordance with the terms set forth in the decedent’s Will and for the preparation of tax returns on Form 1040, Form 706 and Form 1041. When an estate tax return is filed with the Internal Revenue Service, there is a fifty-percent chance of an audit up to four years after the date of the decedent’s passing. This is why Jodie proactively prepares for an audit of every estate. Jodie has over 40 years’ experience with estate administration and will work to ensure that the Executor is prepared to respond to all IRS inquiries swiftly. An Agent once mentioned to Jodie that it typically takes “several weeks to reviewfiles” and he was satisfied with the information Jodie provided in a matter of days. An outside law firm requested Jodie’s assistance on an audit that had been ongoing for over six months. Jodie reviewed and organized the information in the file, gathered the requested documentation for the IRS agent, and the audit concluded shortly afterwards.

Jodie worked alongside Robert Birnbaum (deceased, 2022) for four decades having first joined his practice when he was associated with the firm Rubin, Gross, Harris, Fischl & Roth. When that firm’s partnership dissolved amicably, a new partnership was formed between I. Robert Harris (deceased, 2017) and Robert Birnbaum. Jodie moved with Harris & Birnbaum to the firm Kantor, Davidoff, Mandelker & Kass where they remained until Mr. Harris retired. Rather than “hang out his shingle”, Mr. Birnbaum and Jodie brought the Trusts and Estate practice to Sichenzia Ross Ference Carmel (formerly SRFK) in January of 2018 and Diana Grangio, Esq. joined the Trusts and Estates group.Although Jodie is familiar with Wills, Advance Directives and Trust Agreements, Ms. Grangio, the Trusts and Estates partner and an experienced attorney will discuss estate planning needs with clients. Should you need assistance with your estate plan or with an estate administration, please call Ms. Grangio, who may be reached on her direct line at 212-981-6775 or by email at dgrangio@srfc.law or call Jodie at 646-810-0605 or by email jshahar@srfc.law & certificationsNotary Public CommissionsNew York County – State of New YorkIssued June 1989Passaic County – State of New JerseyIssued August 2021
