NEW YORK, New York — January 8 — Sichenzia Ross Friedman Ference LLP is pleased to announce that founding partner Marc J. Ross will be teaching the first-ever marijuana business and law course at Hofstra University’s School of Law starting in January 2015. Mr. Ross is a leading authority involving the issues surrounding the marijuana legalization debate and the developing, yet still conflicting, laws across the U.S concerning marijuana and marijuana-related businesses.
The coming “Green Rush” of marijuana and marijuana-related businesses are a new, burgeoning area that is estimated to be a multi-billion dollar industry. Like many new industries, marijuana-related businesses will encounter a vast array of business and legal issues that will continue to develop as the industry grows.
Mr. Ross’ course, entitled the “Business and Law of Marijuana” (Hofstra University School of Law Course Number: LAW 2737), will deal with the rapidly-developing business and legal questions encountered in the operation of marijuana-related businesses. In particular, the course will use a fictional business, Cannabis Inc., to explore (1) the interplay between state laws legalizing recreational and/or medical marijuana uses and federal law that expressly bans such uses; (2) enforcement and application of other regulatory regimes governing the operation of marijuana-related businesses, such as banking and securities laws; and (3) the ethical considerations for an attorney advising a client engaged in a marijuana-related business.
